Stephanie Hsu, a multitalented powerhouse performer (Hollywood) with roots in both Chinese and Taiwanese families, was born in California and has gained recognition for her roles as both protagonist Joy Wang and villain Jobu Tupaki in the film Everything Everywhere All at Once from last year, which recently took home seven Oscars.
The 32-year-old actress, who starred with industry heavyweights like the stunning Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis, dominated scene after scene in an impressive wardrobe designed by the renowned Shirley Kurata, which included her memorable Bagel Universe outfit. Despite losing to co-star Curtis, Hsu’s performance earned her her first-ever Oscar nomination. Nevertheless, it’s clear that this proudly Asian performer is just now beginning to showcase her talents to the world.

She can perform, dance, and sing.
Someone with a triple threat? Hsu began her career as a kid performer in school musicals before graduating with a BFA from NYU’s renowned Tisch School for the Arts. Her early professional breaks were on Broadway, where she played Christine Canigula in Be More Chill and Karen the Computer in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Clearly, all that formal training paid off.
She refuses to conform to preconceptions about Asians.
Hsu has experienced racial prejudices and typecasting throughout her career, much like many other actresses of color. Her remedy? Reject any positions involving these kinds of problems.
When I went for a commercial audition in 2012, I recall that they said, “Okay, could you do it again, but with a more Asian accent?” I apologized, but this job is not for me, I added. Hsu told The New York Times earlier this year, “I don’t do that and I’m not interested in this part.”
